Reservoir Characterization Via High Quality miniDST

Speaker: Vinay Mishra

Abstract : Reservoir testing also referred to as Pressure transient analysis (PTA) is a critical requirement of reservoir evaluation for field economic decisions. A properly design testing provides deep characterization insights including reservoir properties such as permeability, skin factor, heterogeneity assessment etc. Decades ago conventional drill stem testing (DST) was the key tool to achieve the best results, but lately, wireline formation testing (WFT) tool acquired miniDST measurement has become a preferred choice due to cost, environmental and operational reasons. In the new era of formation evaluation, there is a tendency to acquire such reservoir dynamic data during the formation evaluation process instead of performing a conventional drill stem test. This presentation will discuss the compelling reasons for acquiring miniDST data by oil and gas operators especially in the offshore oilfields.

Reservoir dynamic tester tool mounted with oval shaped probe or straddle packers added with intelligent test design provides high quality transient data for reservoir characterization. High-rate pumps are included in the tool string which ensure that large pressure drawdown is created, thus enabling testing of a wide range of reservoirs with deeper radius of investigation. Latest technology in-situ fluid density and optical sensors allow advanced fluid characterization which is integrated with the miniDST results for comprehensive reservoir description.
The presentation will also include areas where enhancements are required to improve the data quality and better counter competition. A business strategy would also be discussed to position Halliburton’s miniDST as a widely accepted service by the operators.
